Branching conversations
Continue from an earlier message in the same workspace or an isolated Git worktree.
Branch a chat when you want to explore another approach using the conversation so far. Dream copies the messages through the selected message into a new chat and preserves the original conversation. Messages after that point are not included in the new chat.
Continue in the same workspace#
- Open the source conversation and wait for its response to finish.
- Find the message you want to branch from.
- Use its Continue from this message… action.
- Select This workspace under Branch chat.
- Send a follow-up in the new conversation describing the alternative you want to try.
The new chat starts with the source chat's model and permission settings. In multi-chat, it opens beside the source; in a single-chat layout, it becomes the visible conversation.
For example, branch after the agent explains a bug and ask the new chat to compare a smaller fix. Both conversations can use the current project files.
Branching copies conversation history. It does not restore the filesystem to the state it had when the selected message was sent. Both chats in this workspace still share the same files.
Continue in a new worktree#
For an independent checkout, use Continue from this message… → New worktree. This option requires a Git repository. Dream creates a worktree project and a new chat containing the copied history.
This shortcut uses the current branch as its base and generates a branch name from the chat title. It does not prompt you to choose a custom base ref. To choose a base ref and branch name yourself, create a worktree from the branch switcher.
A new worktree starts from committed Git history. It does not include uncommitted changes or recreate the exact file state at the selected message. Save and commit any changes you need in the new checkout before branching into a worktree.
Choose the right kind of branch#
| You want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Ask a different question about the same current code | This workspace |
| Compare reasoning while keeping the earlier discussion | This workspace |
| Let another agent edit an independent checkout | New worktree |
| Start a task without copying any messages | New chat |
Branching is unavailable while a response is processing. If the worktree option is unavailable, check that the project is inside a Git repository. See Worktrees for opening and removing the resulting project.
