Files and search

Browse project files, search names and file contents, edit code, and handle unsaved changes.

Click Files in the right toolbar to browse the active project's folder. Open a file from the tree to inspect it alongside your chat. File tabs let you move between several open files.

Find a file#

  1. Open Files.
  2. Enter part of a file name or path in Search files above the tree.
  3. Select a result to open it.
  4. Clear the search to return to browsing the tree.

Use Refresh files in the file actions when changes made outside Dream are not reflected in the tree. Searching for a file locates its path; use the editor's search to find text inside that file.

Search or browse the file tree, then open a file beside your chat.

Search and replace within a file#

  1. Open the file and click Search current file in the editor toolbar.
  2. Enter the text in Find.
  3. Use Next match or Previous match to move through results.
  4. Enable Match case, Match whole word, or Use regular expression if needed.

The search panel also offers replacement controls. Review the matches before using Replace all, then save the file to write the changes to disk. Replacement affects the current file.

Edit and save#

Edit a writable text file in the code editor. Unsaved changes are marked in its tab, and the panel can show how many files have unsaved drafts.

Click Save in the editor toolbar, or press Command+S on macOS or Ctrl+S on Windows/Linux while the editor is focused. Save each edited file before asking an agent or terminal command to use the new contents; those tools read files on disk.

Switching file tabs lets you keep drafts while inspecting other files. Use Discard changes to abandon a local draft. This is separate from reverting changes through Git.

Closing a tab with unsaved changes opens a Save / Don't Save / Cancel prompt. Save writes the draft and closes the tab, Don't Save discards the draft and closes it, and Cancel keeps the tab open. If saving fails or conflicts with an external edit, the file stays open so you can resolve the problem.

Handle a file changed outside the editor#

An agent, terminal command, or external editor may change the same file while you have a draft. Dream checks the disk contents when saving and reports a conflict rather than silently overwriting that newer version.

  1. Preserve any draft text you want to keep.
  2. Read the conflict message.
  3. Use Reload from disk to load the current file.
  4. Reapply the changes you still need, then save again.

Reload from disk replaces your local draft. Copy any unsaved work you need before using it.

Adjust the view#

Use Enable word wrap for long lines. Resize the file tree and editor panes to give the content more room. Use available Open in actions to continue in an external editor.

After saving, open Changes to review the Git diff. To ask an agent about a file, reference it with @ in the chat composer.
