Using multiple chats

Work with conversations side by side, arrange columns, and understand their shared project files.

Multi-chat displays several conversations beside each other in the same project. Each conversation keeps its own messages and model selection, so you can compare approaches or keep a review visible while working on an implementation.

Each column keeps its own conversation and model controls while sharing the project's files.

Open chats side by side#

  1. Open a project and the conversation you want to keep visible.
  2. Click Enable multi-chat in the left toolbar. Hover over the toolbar icons to see their names.
  3. Click New chat to add a conversation beside the open one.
  4. Choose a model in the new chat's composer and send a message.

To bring back an existing conversation, open Chat history and select it. Selecting a chat already in the layout focuses that conversation rather than creating a duplicate.

Multi-chat is a project setting. You can keep several conversations visible in one project and use a single conversation in another.

Arrange the workspace#

  • Resize: Drag the divider between chat columns to adjust their widths.
  • Reorder: Drag a chat by its title area to move it beside another conversation.
  • Close a column: Click the × in its header. The conversation remains in Chat history.
  • Return to one conversation: Select the chat you want to keep in view, then click Disable multi-chat in the left toolbar.

The close control is available when there is another open chat to leave in view. Turning off multi-chat does not archive the other conversations; open them again from history when needed.

Example: implement, then review#

  1. Start a chat named “Implement settings persistence” and ask it to fix the settings form.
  2. Enable multi-chat and create a second chat named “Review settings persistence.”
  3. Choose another enabled model in the review chat if you want a second model's assessment.
  4. Once the implementation is ready, ask the review chat to inspect the current changes and report issues without editing files.
  5. Keep the review visible while asking the implementation chat to address its findings.
  6. Close the review column when you need more room. Reopen it from history to revisit the findings.

The second chat does not automatically receive the first chat's messages. Give it the task context and reference the relevant files, or use conversation branching when you want to copy earlier messages.

Understand what is shared#

All chats in the same project work against the same project folder. File edits and Git branch changes are visible to the other chats, even though their conversation histories are separate.

Two agents editing the same files can interfere with each other's work. Use separate Git worktrees when tasks need independent checkouts. Enabling multi-chat alone does not isolate file changes.

For completed conversations, use archiving to keep history manageable.
