Providing context

Reference project files and folders, attach files, and give an agent a clear task.

Give the agent an outcome, the relevant context, and any constraints before it starts work. A file reference helps it locate code; an attachment can provide additional material such as a screenshot.

Reference a project file or folder#

  1. In a chat's message box, type @ followed by part of a file or folder path.
  2. Choose a result from the list. Use Arrow Up and Arrow Down to move through results, then Enter or Tab to select one.
  3. Add your instructions around the inserted reference.
  4. Submit the message.

For example, reference the settings component and ask:

Explain how this form loads and saves preferences. Find why a refresh loses the selected value.

Select a file when you know where the task belongs, or a folder when the agent needs to inspect several related files. The result list shows parent paths to help distinguish files with the same name. Press Escape to dismiss the list.

References identify locations in the current project. They do not freeze file contents or attach a copy of an entire directory to the conversation.

Attach a file#

  1. Click the Attach file control beside the message box.
  2. Choose the attachment action and select a file from your computer.
  3. Check that the attachment appears in the composer.
  4. Explain what the agent should do with it, then submit the message.

For a screenshot, describe the expected behavior as well as what is wrong. The selected provider and model determine which attachment types they can use.

Use the + control beside the message box to add an attachment.

Use a skill for repeatable instructions#

Type $ in the composer to find an agent skill for the selected provider and project. Choose it, then describe the task. Skills can supply procedures or project conventions alongside the file references and attachments in your message.

For plain text you want to send repeatedly, use reusable prompts.

View and copy an image#

Click an image in the conversation to open its larger preview. Hover over the image to reveal Copy image in the upper-right corner, then click it to copy the image to the clipboard.

To capture Dream itself for a report or another chat, use the window screenshot shortcut.

Remove context before sending#

Use an attachment's remove control to remove it from the composer. For an inline project reference, delete its mention from the message; the reference is removed with it. Check the remaining text so the request still makes sense.

If @ does not find a path, verify the active project and look for the file in Files. Use its current path if it has been moved or renamed.

Give another chat enough context#

Separate chats do not automatically share their messages. When starting a review beside an implementation chat, identify what changed, which files matter, and what the reviewer should check.

Use branching to carry earlier messages into another conversation, or Stash to save a prompt with project references for later.
