Troubleshooting

Resolve missing models and chats, terminal and preview problems, and common Git errors.

Start with the error shown in the affected chat or tool. Check which project and provider are selected before changing settings, especially when several chats are open.

A provider CLI is not detected#

  1. Open your system terminal and verify that the provider CLI starts.
  2. Complete its sign-in or first-run setup.
  3. Open Settings → Providers in Dream and refresh that provider.
  4. If you installed it while Dream was open and detection still fails, restart Dream so it can pick up the changed environment.

Dream needs the executable to be available to the app, not only through a shortcut or alias in an interactive shell. See Connect a provider.

A model is missing or I cannot start a chat#

Check Settings → Providers and enable at least one detected model. A detected CLI with no enabled models is not enough to start a chat. Refresh after changing the provider's authentication or model configuration. For OpenCode, complete its authentication or configuration before refreshing.

Then check Settings → General → Models. If a previously selected default is unavailable, choose an enabled model again. Existing chats have their own selectors; changing the global default does not replace those selections.

Effort or speed controls are missing#

These controls depend on the selected model's capabilities. Choose a model that exposes the option you need. Switching a chat's model resets its effort and speed selection, so check both afterward. See Models and defaults.

I cannot find a chat#

  1. Select the project where the conversation took place.
  2. Open Chat history and clear its search field.
  3. Search by the chat's title, rather than words inside its messages.
  4. Check Settings → Archived Chats and restore the chat if it is there.
  5. If its project is closed, reopen it through Recently closed on the getting-started screen.

Closing a multi-chat column does not archive the conversation. Empty chats without messages are not listed in history. A permanently deleted chat cannot be restored through Dream.

A restored chat was archived again#

Restoring a chat preserves its last-activity date. If you run Archive now again and that date is older than the cutoff, it qualifies for archiving again. Review the cutoff and the conversations you want to keep before running the action.

Branching is unavailable#

Wait for the current response to finish before branching. New worktree also requires a Git repository. A missing or invalid base ref can prevent worktree creation; verify that the repository has the committed branch or ref you want to use.

If expected edits are missing from a new worktree, check whether they were uncommitted in the original project. Worktrees do not copy those changes. See Git worktrees.

A reply has no View file changes control#

The control appears on assistant messages after the response finishes, and only when a checkpoint was captured for that reply. Check that Change checkpoints is enabled in Settings → General → Chat messages, and that the git executable is available to Dream. Very large projects can exceed the capture time limit, in which case the reply runs without a checkpoint. See Reviewing and restoring changes.

I cannot send diff or element feedback#

The send control is disabled while the destination chat is responding and shows Chat busy. Wait for it to finish or enable New chat in the popover. If the popover reports that the selection no longer matches the diff, refresh Changes and select the lines again. See Sending feedback to a chat.

Continue in terminal is missing#

The action is available for Claude chats with a valid resumable provider session and is disabled while a response is processing. A new chat, another provider, or a session reset after changing the model or speed may not have it. See Terminals.

A terminal fails to open#

Check that the project directory still exists. Choose an available shell in Settings → General → Terminal, then open a new session. For Claude continuation, the original session directory must also exist. Try the same shell in your system terminal to identify environment problems.

A browser preview is blank or stale#

Confirm that the application is running and use the exact URL and port shown in its terminal. Inspect terminal errors, then try Refresh browser or Force reload. Compare the URL in your system browser. Use DevTools for page errors; reserve clearing cookies or cache for the relevant authentication or caching problem. See Browser previews.

A file cannot be saved#

Check whether the file is writable and read the editor's error. If it changed on disk while you were editing, preserve your draft before Reload from disk, then reapply the intended changes. See Files and search.

Git actions fail#

For problems with PR comments, editing, or merging, see Reviewing pull requests. Check that GitHub CLI is authenticated and your account has the required repository permissions. A draft PR must be marked ready before merging.

SymptomWhat to check
No Git tools for a folderOpen a folder inside a Git repository
No staged changes to commitReview Include unstaged, or stage the intended files through Git
Staged changes outside the active projectCommit them separately before using Dream's commit action
Push has no destinationConfigure a Git remote and verify access to it
PR creation reports a CLI errorVerify that GitHub CLI is installed, authenticated, and can access the repository
PR source and base are the sameSwitch to a feature branch before creating the PR
PR creation reports detached HEADCheck out a branch before creating the PR
Worktree removal failsReview and preserve uncommitted changes in that checkout
Merge & remove is unavailableThe worktree has no commits ahead of its base, or the main checkout has uncommitted changes or a merge in progress
Complete worktree reports conflictsThe merge was aborted and nothing changed; merge the base branch into the worktree, resolve conflicts, commit, then retry
Create pull request is unavailable in Complete worktreeConfigure a Git remote and install GitHub CLI

After a combined action fails, inspect the branch state before retrying: a commit or push may have succeeded before a later step failed. See Git workflows.
