Agent skills

Find, invoke, preview, and create skills for your coding agents.

A skill packages instructions in a SKILL.md file. Dream discovers skills for the selected agent and project using that provider's skill locations. The skill picker supports Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Cursor Agent.

Use a skill in a chat#

  1. Open a chat and select the model you want to use.
  2. Type $ followed by part of a skill's name in the message box.
  3. Choose a skill from the picker and add your task instructions.
  4. Send the message.

For example, select a release-checklist skill and ask it to review the current changes before a release. Dream shows the chosen skill as an inline mention and records used skills on the sent message. Available skills can change when you switch the chat's provider or project.

Skill invocation is handled by the selected provider. Mentioning a skill supplies instructions; it does not change the chat's permission settings.

Browse and preview skills#

  1. Open Settings → Skills.
  2. Choose the provider tab and the project to inspect.
  3. Select a skill to see its description, source, path, and SKILL.md preview.
  4. Use Open folder to edit its files in your preferred editor.
Select a provider and project to see the skills that agent can load, then preview a skill's instructions.

Skills are grouped by scope, such as Project, Personal, Plugin, Managed, and Built-in, when those sources are available. Use Refresh after installing or editing a skill if it has not appeared yet.

Enable or disable a skill#

Claude Code and Codex offer per-skill switches. These update the provider's own configuration, so they also affect skill availability outside Dream. Claude Code stores overrides in ~/.claude/settings.json; Codex stores them through its app-server in ~/.codex/config.toml.

OpenCode and Cursor do not offer a per-skill switch in Dream. To stop loading a skill, manage its folder in the provider's skill locations.

Create a skill#

  1. In Settings → Skills, choose the project if the skill should belong to one.
  2. Click New skill.
  3. Enter a Name, a Description explaining when to use it, and Instructions (SKILL.md).
  4. Select one or more Location choices.
  5. Optionally select Only run when mentioned, then click Create.

Names use lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens, with a maximum of 64 characters. Dream creates a folder with that name and a SKILL.md file in each chosen location.

Project locations require an open project. Only run when mentioned writes the skill's disable-model-invocation setting; how that setting is enforced depends on the provider.

You can also start from Save as skill in Settings → Prompts.

If a skill is missing#

Check the selected provider and project, refresh the list, and read any discovery error shown in Settings. Confirm that the skill is in a location the provider reads and that it has not been disabled. A skill available to one provider is not necessarily available to another.
